  • S. M. Stirling’s post-apocalyptic saga begins with Dies the Fire: one evening in 1998 electricity, engines and gunpowder simply stop working, and in Oregon a bush pilot, a Wiccan folk singer and a historian who crowns himself warlord build rival societies out of swords, bows and farming.
  • The early books are gritty survival; later ones follow the next generation and lean into myth and fantasy.
  • Only the first has enough ratings, and they are modest.
