Our view

Often read as a love story, this is really a novel of possession and revenge, and a far harsher one than that label suggests. Almost nobody in it is kind: some readers finish it disliking Heathcliff and most of the two families around him. The cruelty is the point, though, and the book stays oddly compelling throughout. Best for those who enjoy Gothic intensity and can do without a character to root for.

Worth knowing Emily Brontë’s only novel, published in December 1847 under the pen name Ellis Bell, a year before her death at thirty. The story reaches the reader at second hand: the visitor Lockwood hears most of it from the housekeeper Nelly Dean, and neither is entirely reliable. Many adaptations stop halfway and leave out the second generation. Emerald Fennell’s 2026 film stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.

About the book

Wuthering Heights is the only novel by the English author Emily Brontë, initially published in 1847 under her pen name Ellis Bell. It concerns two extensive upland estates and their landowning families on the West Yorkshire moors, the Earnshaws and the Lintons; and their turbulent relationships with the Earnshaws' foster son, Heathcliff. Driven by themes of love, possession, revenge, and reconciliation, the novel is influenced by Romanticism and Gothic fiction. It is considered a classic of English literature.
