Our view
“Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is an anti-slavery novel written to move its readers, with a secure place in American history. Published in 1852, it profoundly changed attitudes in the United States. Some readers judge it more effective as persuasion than as literature: sentimental, melodramatic, with characters of little depth and an ending tied up neatly. It suits those curious about how a story can serve a cause.
