Our view
“Twilight” is an unembarrassed fantasy of first love and is best read as one. The new girl in a small town turns out to be the one person a dangerous vampire can neither resist nor read. That wish fulfilment is the whole appeal, and the book commits to it completely. Some readers outside its intended audience find the story merely average, though it holds up better than most of its imitators.
Worth knowing Stephenie Meyer has said the book began with a dream she had on 2 June 2003, and she finished the manuscript within about three months. It is set in the real town of Forks, Washington, which later drew fans in large numbers. Midnight Sun (2020) retells this story from Edward’s point of view. Catherine Hardwicke’s 2008 film launched the film series.
