Our view
“Tithe” stands on its heroine: Kaye is sarcastic, stubborn and self-reliant, and the story draws the reader into her life at once. A second lead makes a good counterweight to her. Some readers who arrive after Holly Black’s later books find this early novel less assured. It opens the “Modern Faerie Tales” trilogy and is written for young adults who like fairy tales moved into the modern world.
