Our view

“The Toll” brings the Arc of a Scythe trilogy to a bold, large-scale close, though not every reader ranks it with the two books before it. At over six hundred pages it has room for many storylines, and the direction of the ending takes people by surprise. Some wish that turn had been better prepared, and that one or two earlier threads had been picked up again.
