Our view
Dean Koontz’s “The Taking” brings the end of the world to a small town, and the threat that arrives does not seem to be of this earth. The horror keeps an intimate scale: one community facing something far larger than itself. Some readers enjoy the plot but find the narrator’s religious moralising heavier as the story goes on. Readers who like their apocalypse told close up are its natural audience.
