Our view
“The Scarlet Pimpernel” is a swashbuckling romance of disguises and rescues in the French Revolution, written as pure adventure. Some readers point to a proper villain, the secret identity at its heart and the mix of action and love story, while noting dialogue and attitudes that have dated. Some tire of being told how clever the heroine is, and some who liked it when young find it weaker on return.
