Our view

Alexandra, the capable farmer at its centre, anchors “O Pioneers!”, Cather’s clear-eyed novel of immigrants on the Nebraska plains. The prose brings the prairie vividly to life. Despite the homesteading setting, the book is chiefly about people and what passes between them, and its later chapters turn toward romance and desire. Sombre yet hopeful in mood, it leaves some readers unconvinced by its ending.
