Our view

“The Hidden Staircase” is a light, charming Nancy Drew adventure, and the one its writer, Mildred Wirt Benson, loved best. The second mystery in the series, written in 1930 and reworked in 1959, can bring back happy memories for adults who grew up with it, and it still holds children’s attention when read aloud. Some readers notice how firmly it belongs to its era, in a well-off and very white world.
