“The Glass Hotel” makes the collapse of a financial fraud into something quiet and haunting, told out of order through the lives it damages. The prose is graceful and smooth, and seeing the scattered pieces lock together is the main satisfaction. Readers wanting momentum or closeness to the characters may feel held at a distance; some find it less moving than the author’s “Station Eleven”.

About the book
The Glass Hotel is a 2020 novel by Canadian writer Emily St. John Mandel. It is Mandel's fifth novel, and the first since winning the Arthur C. Clarke Award with her novel Station Eleven in 2015. It follows the aftermath of a disturbing graffiti incident at a hotel on Vancouver Island and the collapse of an international Ponzi scheme.
