Our view
“The Evening and the Morning” goes back before “The Pillars of the Earth” and makes the injustice of life around the year 1000 vivid. Ken Follett covers a decade of Viking raids and the beginnings of Kingsbridge, and some readers find the plot clear and hard to leave. Others note that the story now and then pauses to explain medieval crafts in detail, which gives the book something of the documentary.
