Our view
“The Casual Vacancy” is a sharply observed novel of small-town feuds whose real achievement is its large, convincing cast. Behind the pretty English setting it deals bluntly with addiction, abuse and neglect, and some readers find the language and several scenes too graphic to finish, or few of the characters likeable. It is best approached on its own terms, not as a successor to Harry Potter.
