Our view
What holds “The Apprentice” together is its detective, the gifted and haunted Jane Rizzoli. It is the second “Rizzoli & Isles” novel, set a year after “The Surgeon”, and some readers single out its technical detail. The resolution comes too quickly and too neatly for some after the long build-up, and the villains’ brooding monologues and the sex scenes have struck others as tacked on.
