Our view

“Silverthorn” narrows “The Riftwar Saga” to one urgent quest: Prince Arutha’s race to save the woman he loves. The tighter focus makes it a shorter, more personal book than “Magician” without losing the sweep of the adventure, and the young Jimmy the Hand is a highlight. Some readers find it heavy on familiar fantasy conventions, and it stops on cliffhangers that lead straight into the next volume.
