Our view

“Silver on the Tree” brings Susan Cooper’s “The Dark Is Rising” sequence to a myth-filled, eventful close. Some readers who loved the series as children find its storytelling undimmed and the ending close to perfect. Others find the pattern of journey, obstacle and rescue by higher powers repetitive, or feel the series leaves too much unexplained. Written for younger teenagers, it still rewards adults who return to it.
