Our view

Warm and gentle, “Sandry’s Book” lets four young mages find their powers and each other. Tamora Pierce opens the “Circle of Magic” quartet at an unhurried pace: Sandry works her magic through thread, and none of the children takes over the story. Some readers wish the characters grew more gradually, and find Sandry has surprisingly little of her own book. A good choice for anyone after cosy fantasy.
