Our view
King spends most of this novel making a small Maine town feel inhabited, and that patience is what makes its fall to the vampires hurt. The build-up is long, and some readers find the crowd of minor figures hard to keep apart and the love story the weakest thread. It rewards readers who prefer dread that gathers gradually to quick shocks.
