Our view

Told entirely through letters, diaries and press clippings, the vampire hunt reads like a real case file with a strong sense of time passing. For some, that same method is the main hurdle: the Count is on the page far less than his fame suggests, and they find the opening at his castle livelier than the detail-heavy stretches that follow. The prose, though more than a century old, is evocative and easy to follow.

Worth knowing Bram Stoker, who managed London’s Lyceum Theatre, never visited Transylvania; he researched it in libraries and found the name Dracula in a book borrowed in Whitby, where part of the novel is set. The story is told entirely through diaries, letters, newspaper cuttings and phonograph recordings. F. W. Murnau’s Nosferatu (1922) was an unauthorised adaptation, and Stoker’s widow won a court order for its prints to be destroyed.

It has no single protagonist and opens with English solicitor Jonathan Harker taking a business trip to stay at the castle of a Transylvanian nobleman, Count Dracula.
