Editor’s note Marc-Uwe Kling’s 2017 satire is set in a near-future country that has rebranded itself QualityLand, where algorithms pick your partner, your job and your purchases before you know you want them. Peter Arbeitsloser, who runs a scrapyard for defective machines, receives a pink dolphin-shaped vibrator from the online giant TheShop and simply wants to send it back. The German edition came out in a light and a dark version with different interludes; the novel won the German Science Fiction Prize in 2018, and a sequel followed in 2020.
