Our view
“Notes from a Small Island” is an affectionate and frequently very funny portrait of Britain as seen by an American travelling through it. Bryson notices what the British no longer see in themselves, and the laughs come from that outsider’s eye. Some readers tire of his grumbling about hotels, meals and modern buildings, which they find repetitive, and some feel part of the humour has dated.
