Our view
Bill Bryson’s attempt to hike the entire Appalachian Trail becomes, in “A Walk in the Woods”, an engaging story of wilderness and friendship. He was on the trail through spring and summer 1996, for much of the way with a friend whom readers of his earlier European travel book will recognise. At just over three hundred pages, it suits anyone curious about what a hike of several months really involves.

About the book
A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail is a 1998 travel book by the writer Bill Bryson, chronicling his attempt to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail during the spring and summer of 1996. For much of his journey, Bryson was accompanied by his friend Matt Angerer, who had previously appeared in Bryson's 1991 book Neither Here nor There: Travels in Europe.
Where the score comes from
