Editor’s note Norse Mythology, from 2017, is Neil Gaiman retelling the stories of the Eddas in his own order and voice: fifteen of them, from the creation out of fire and ice, through Odin giving an eye for wisdom, the building of Asgard’s wall, Thor’s hammer and the theft of it, Loki’s children, the death of Balder, to Ragnarök and what comes after. Gaiman has used these gods before, in American Gods and the Sandman, but here he keeps to the sources, Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda, adding only connective tissue and jokes, and the book is as close to a plain children’s-and-adults’ edition of the myths as English has. He reads the audiobook himself. About 300 pages; the stories are short and can be read in any order after the first.
