Our view

Flaubert’s portrait of a woman who measures her provincial marriage against the novels she has read still feels uncomfortably modern. The prose is a pleasure, exact and unhurried, but the story is a painful one: Emma’s self-absorption and the fate of her dull, devoted husband are hard to watch. Best for readers who do not need to like a heroine to be held by her.
