Our view

“Machine Vendetta” closes Alastair Reynolds’s Prefect Dreyfus trilogy with a solid murder case among the habitats of the Glitter Band. Following straight on from “Elysium Fire”, it is, by the author’s own account, his last Revelation Space book for now. Several readers find it less sharp and less surprising than the earlier volumes, though some of them still relish the flashes of Reynolds’s prose. It only makes full sense after the first two books.
