Our view
“Little House in the Big Woods” is less a story than a warm, detailed picture of family life in 1870s Wisconsin. It works well read aloud: children hear how food is stored for winter, how Christmas is kept and how maple syrup is made, with no tragedy in this first volume. An adult coming to it fresh may find it plotless and a little distant. Best shared with young children.
