Our view

“Howards End” follows two sisters through an England bound by social convention and ends up deeply moving. Forster tells of the Schlegels and their entanglements through a plot that can still surprise, in prose that reads with ease. Some readers find the early chapters slow, with characters who argue positions rather than live, and the man at the centre of the love story hard to tolerate.
