Our view

The final novel is a dark wartime quest that builds toward the confrontation the whole series has promised. Its closing chapters are the reason some readers rank it highest of all, though the opening stretch strikes some as its weakest part. At around seven hundred pages the book demands stamina. It is only for those who have read everything before it; for them, a fitting end.

Worth knowing The last of the seven, published in July 2007: it sold 8.3 million copies in the US in its first 24 hours. Rowling has said its final chapter was drafted years earlier, long before the series was finished. Unlike the earlier books, it spends most of its length away from Hogwarts. It was the first book in the series to be split into two films, released in 2010 and 2011.
