Our view

“Gregor the Overlander” is a warm, adventurous children’s fantasy that does not shy away from war and death in its underground world. Eleven-year-old Gregor follows his little sister into a realm of giant bats, cockroaches and rats whose alliances and prejudices are worked out with care. Some adult readers find the beginning weak and the prose less accomplished than in “The Hunger Games”, and say the ending is what makes them care about Gregor.
