Our view

Haldeman uses military science fiction in “Forever Peace” to ask, darkly and thoughtfully, what it would take to end war. Some readers find many fine ideas in it but a plot that feels disjointed and hard to grasp on a first reading. The novel won the Hugo, Nebula and John W. Campbell Memorial awards; despite its title, some readers point out, it is no sequel to “The Forever War” and has entirely different characters.
