Our view
“Forest Mage”, the second novel of Robin Hobb’s “Soldier Son” trilogy, is a dark middle volume carried by the quality of her writing. Some readers warm to the friends Spink and Epiny more than to the narrator, Nevare, and find him even harder to like than in the first book. The mood stays grim from start to finish. It belongs after the first volume, for readers who trust Hobb with a difficult hero.
