Our view

“Early Riser” is an inventive stand-alone satire set in an alternate world where humanity sleeps through the winter. Jasper Fforde follows a novice Winter Consul through the cold months, mixing comedy with something darker. Readers who know his earlier series tend to find this one less engaging; the worldbuilding feels hard going to some, and the story forgettable to others, despite the writing. It suits readers who enjoy satire spun from a single strange premise.
