“Cross” is a personal, psychologically driven twelfth Alex Cross thriller with a strong thread of revenge. James Patterson gives the villain’s story more room than usual and digs into Cross as a man as well as a detective. Some readers enjoy its twists and its psychological edge; others find the series predictable by now, for all its short, quick chapters, and Cross himself rather dull.
