Our view

“Bad Monkey” is Carl Hiaasen in full comic-crime mode: a severed arm, a disgraced detective and the Florida Keys crowded with schemers. Demoted to inspecting restaurant kitchens, Andrew Yancy hopes to prove the arm belongs to a murder victim and win back his old job. Working out the swindle is part of the pleasure, though some readers find hardly a likeable soul in the whole cast. The humour is dark but never heavy.
