Our view

“Anne of Avonlea” is a gentle, good-humoured sequel whose appeal lies in more time spent with Anne and her village. It follows her from sixteen to eighteen as a young teacher on Prince Edward Island, in a light tone built from small-town incident and friendship. Some readers find it slow beside the first book and are less convinced by some of the younger characters than they once were by Anne herself.
