Nathaniel Hawthorne
Nathaniel Hawthorne — one title in the rankings.
Editor’s note The Scarlet Letter, set in Puritan Boston, follows Hester Prynne, forced to wear a scarlet A for adultery, and the hidden guilt of the minister who shares her secret. It is a school classic and rates low here, partly because of its dense nineteenth-century prose and its long opening essay, The Custom-House, which many readers skip and come back to later. It is the only book of his here with enough ratings.
