Jean M. Auel

Jean M. Auel — 6 titles in the rankings, first published between 1980 and 2011. They average 7.7, below the 7.8 the whole catalogue averages. One series has a reading order worth keeping to.

Editor’s note American writer of the Earth’s Children novels, set in Ice Age Europe and built on years of research into how early humans lived. In The Clan of the Cave Bear, her most read, Ayla, a Cro-Magnon girl orphaned by an earthquake, is raised by a clan of Neanderthals who never quite accept her. The Valley of Horses, where she survives alone and meets Jondalar, rates highest; the later books grow longer and more repetitive, and The Land of Painted Caves rates lowest. Read in order.
