Editor’s note American author of picture books who wrote short, rhythmic texts for the youngest listeners. Goodnight Moon (1947), illustrated by Clement Hurd, has a little rabbit saying goodnight to everything in a great green room; it sold modestly at first, and the New York Public Library did not stock it until 1972, but it became one of the best-loved bedtime books ever. The Runaway Bunny (1942), also illustrated by Hurd, is a game of chase between a bunny and his mother. She died in 1952, aged 42. Start with Goodnight Moon, for ages 0–3.
