Editor’s note American writer whose Chronicles of Prydain, drawn from Welsh mythology, are classics of children’s fantasy: Taran, an Assistant Pig-Keeper who dreams of being a hero, sets out after his oracular pig and finds friends, war and the real cost of heroism. The Black Cauldron, a Newbery Honor book later loosely filmed by Disney, is the most read; The High King, which won the Newbery Medal, rates highest, and the whole series grows deeper as Taran grows up.
