Editor’s note Irish novelist best known for The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, a short fable in which Bruno, the nine-year-old son of a Nazi commandant, befriends a Jewish boy on the other side of a camp fence. It became a worldwide bestseller and a film and is widely taught, but historians and Holocaust educators, including the Auschwitz Memorial, have criticised it for distorting what the camps were. Its score is good but not high. His adult novels still have too few ratings here.
