Colson Whitehead

Colson Whitehead — 4 titles in the rankings, first published between 2011 and 2021. They average 7.9, above the 7.8 the whole catalogue averages. One series has a reading order worth keeping to.

Editor’s note One of only a few writers to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction twice. The Underground Railroad, in which the escape route from slavery becomes a literal railway beneath the South, is the most read. The Nickel Boys, about two Black boys sent to a brutal reform school in 1960s Florida, rates highest and is shorter. Harlem Shuffle, a crime caper, and Zone One, a literary zombie novel, rate much lower.
