Daniel Defoe
Daniel Defoe — one title in the rankings. One series has a reading order worth keeping to.
Editor’s note English merchant, pamphleteer and government spy who wrote Robinson Crusoe at about sixty, in 1719, presenting it as the true memoir of a sailor shipwrecked for twenty-eight years. Often called one of the first English novels, it is a survival manual, a spiritual autobiography and a story of empire, and Crusoe’s treatment of Friday reads very differently today, which helps explain its modest score. Defoe was once pilloried for a satirical pamphlet; he also wrote Moll Flanders and A Journal of the Plague Year.
