Thomas Hardy

Thomas Hardy — 5 titles in the rankings, first published between 1874 and 1895. They average 7.6, below the 7.8 the whole catalogue averages.

Editor’s note English novelist and poet whose Wessex novels set ordinary rural lives against chance, class and unforgiving fate. Tess of the d’Urbervilles is by far the most read but the lowest rated here, perhaps because so many meet it at school; Far from the Madding Crowd, with its headstrong farmer Bathsheba Everdene, is the gentlest entry point. Jude the Obscure, his bleakest novel, rates highest; after the outrage it caused he gave up fiction for poetry.
