  • Three books, read in order, and know before you start that Gemmell did not finish them: he died during the third, and his wife Stella completed Fall of Kings from his notes.
  • The join is visible and the ending is hers as much as his.
  • This is the Trojan war with the gods taken out — Helen is plain, Achilles is barely in it, and the hero is Aeneas, which is the point Gemmell was making.
  • If you want Homer, this is not that; if you want the war as a war, it is very good.
