- Michael J. Sullivan’s trilogy set in the world of his Riyria books, in the age between the founding of the empire in Legends of the First Empire and the time of Royce and Hadrian.
- Each book centres on a figure Riyria readers already know by legend: Nolyn, the emperor’s son fighting a hopeless frontier war; Farilane, a princess and historian; and Esrahaddon, the wizard.
- Warm, clever and full of connections.
- Nolyn is the one with enough ratings.
- Best after Legends of the First Empire; read in order.
