- Nine novels over twenty-six years, and they change as they go: the early ones are adventures for children, the late ones — Moominpappa at Sea, Moominvalley in November — are quiet books about loneliness and getting old, with barely a Moomin in the last of them.
- Publication order is the right order for exactly that reason.
- The Moomins and the Great Flood is a slight wartime first attempt that Jansson herself treated as a prelude; most readers start with Comet in Moominland and lose nothing.
