Quick answer

Publication order
6 volumes1934–1988Completed
- Six books over fifty-four years, and they barely move: Mary Poppins arrives, works her way through a set of episodes, and leaves at the end of each one, and the children never age.
- So the order matters less than in almost any series here — except at the edges.
- Start with Mary Poppins, because that is where she blows in on the east wind, and note that the last three were written decades later, in 1952, 1982 and 1988, when Travers was returning to a character she had long stopped wanting to write about.
- Two more books carry the name and are not stories: From A to Z is an alphabet book and In the Kitchen a cookbook.
- And if you know the 1964 film: Travers hated it, and the books are sharper, stranger and much less kind.
