• Esphyr Slobodkina’s 1940 picture book, still in print and still read aloud everywhere: a peddler who carries all his caps stacked on his own head falls asleep under a tree and wakes to find a troop of monkeys wearing them, copying everything he does.
• Its rhythm and repetition make children join in and act it out, and it is one of the best rated picture books here.
• The later sequels, written with Ann Marie Mulhearn Sayer, have few ratings.
