- Read them in order and you get something the individual books cannot give you: Renko investigating the Soviet Union, then its collapse, then what replaced it, across thirty-five years and the same worn-down man.
- Gorky Park is the first and the famous one.
- The books stand alone as detective novels, so starting anywhere works — but Renko's life is the through-line, and the later books assume the losses.
- Smith wrote nine in all, and the last was published in 2023 while he was living with Parkinson's, which the novel is quietly about.
