Editor’s note Stefan Zweig’s only completed novel, published in 1939 while he lived in exile in England. Anton Hofmiller, a young cavalry lieutenant in a garrison town, begins visiting Edith, a paralysed girl, out of pity, and cannot find a way out of the feelings his kindness creates. Its English title is Beware of Pity. Wes Anderson named Zweig’s books as the inspiration for The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014).
